This page is designed to help the IT user at Mason navigate the Data Stewardship Policy. The three levels of security as defined here augment the Policy’s definition. For data that fall into the Policy’s categories of Public Use Data and Internal Use Only Data, the steps outlined in the Basic Security section are recommended. These security measures are explained in step-by-step instructions. If you experience difficulty, please contact the ITU Support Center at (703) 993-8870.
The Policy labels Highly Sensitive Data any data that are protected by law, regulation or policy. The ITU provides two levels of security recommendations for such data. First, all users of such data need to protect it by following the steps outlined in the More Security - Regulated Data section. Step-by-step instructions are provided, but personal assistance can be arranged by calling the ITU Support Center. Second, there is a subset of Highly Sensitive Data which is of such a nature that its loss or exposure would cause severe reputational, legal, financial or operational damage. The ITU will work with the users of such data to develop a security plan commensurate with the value of the data. Details can be found in the Highest Level Security section.

Everyone should take these Basic Security steps to ensure that their computer runs smoothly and safely on the Mason Network. These steps are not a guarantee that your computer will not be compromised, but serve to make your computer a less inviting target to malicious persons.

Data that is specifically protected by law, regulation or university policy, requires the Basic Security steps, plus the More Security - Regulated Data measures for additional security.

If the step by step instructions do not work for your computer type or you need other special assistance in implementing these steps, please contact the friendly staff at the ITU Support Center.

Data that, if accessed by unauthorized persons, could cause severe reputational, monetary, legal, or operational damage, requires even more protective measures.

Data in this category include but are not limited to: classified research, medical records, accusations/investigations of criminal activity, files of passwords to university systems, bank account and credit card PINs and passwords, etc.

As there are multiple options for security at this high level and many of these are complex, we recommend you schedule a consultation with our Director of IT Security.
