A
systems administrator (sysadmin) is an individual responsible for maintaining a multi-user computing system. Typical duties include: setting up user accounts; installing software, sometimes available system wide; allocating storage space to user accounts; and patching software. This is a list of some of the fundamental security measures a sysadmin at George Mason should take.
Reminders
Every computer should be prepared with some basic security precautions before it is connected to a network. These steps are not a guarantee that your computer will not be compromised, but serve to make your computer a less inviting target to malicious persons.
A computer is only as secure as its weakest point. Strong security is about keeping good habits.
Once connected, computers are open to many unexpected issues. It is critical that systems be maintained.
