Steps to take for Windows Users

This category is for data regulated by law, regulations, or university policy; such data fall under the "Highly Sensitive" category in the Data Stewardship Policy.*

If you need assistance implementing these steps, please contact the ITU Support Center at (703) 993-8870.

Step 1:   Put your PC in a Personal Firewall
Step 2:   Turn on File Extension Names
Step 3:   Create a Strong Password for the Computer Administrator (CA) Account
Step 4:   Disable "Guest" Accounts on Computer
Step 5:   Save Files to Disk before Opening Them

*Note: Some regulated data require even greater protection due to its potential to severely damage people or the university. Examples are: extensive personal information lists (sets of information that form a "complete picture" of a person); information that enables changes to grades or other critical data; a file of passwords to other systems; police records; medical records; formulae for dangerous substances; bank account information; internal EEO accusations (or other information that would cause great personal reputational damage); crosswalks (lists that match two ID numbers like SSNs and G Numbers). These are just a sample of the type of data that require more security than the protections listed in this section.
