Security for Everyone
Use Secure Shell for Transferring Files
If you need assistance implementing these steps, please contact the ITU Support Center at (703) 993-8870.
- How? Install the Secure Shell client from the ITU Support web site. They provide step-by-step instructions for installation and use of Secure Shell.
- Why? Traditional file transfer programs such as FTP (file transfer protocol) and Telnet transfer the data in clear text, meaning anyone watching (eavesdropping) the transfer would be able to see the data. (For example, a password file.) Secure Shell (SSH) provides an encrypted link between client and server computers and should be used anytime sensitive data is transferred, particularly from computers outside the Mason network domain.
