Security for Everyone
Use SSL or https for Online Transactions
If you need assistance implementing these steps, please contact the ITU Support Center at (703) 993-8870.
- How? When logging into online resources which require submitting your password or PIN please look in the address bar of your browser to verify that there is an “S” after the http. This lets you know that when you submit your password or PIN or credit card information (if you are already logged into a web site) it will be transmitted over the network in an encrypted form.
Browsers (i.e., Netscape, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Firefox) offer a graphical image of a locked padlock, generally in the lower right hand corner of your browser’s window. The presence of this padlock image is another way to visually let you know your sensitive data is being transmitted using an encryption algorithm. - Why? The https and/or the presence of the padlock image means that hackers can not “sniff” or look at the data in plain (clear) text as it traverses the network.
Limit the financial and personal data you send to web sites. If the web site gives you the option of not storing your information, take it. Use a credit card for online purchases, not a debit card.
