Security for Everyone

Never Open Suspicious E-mails or Attachments

If you need assistance implementing this step, please contact the ITU Support Center at (703) 993-8870.

  • Why? You may recognize the name of the person who sent you an e-mail, but that is not enough to protect you. There are many ways a hacker can seize control of someone's e-mail address and then send you malicious e-mail that will cause you problems.

Remember, e-mail is still the number one favorite method for distributing malicious code to your computer. Malicious code can come in the form of a virus, worm, trojan, spam, spyware, or phishing e-mail. Don’t be concerned if you don’t recognize all of the categories of malicious code. Remember that e-mail is the way they are trying to deliver it. If in doubt about an email, delete it and call the sender. Stay safe and aware. Avoid being used as a conduit to distribute malware.
