• How? To check what operating system (OS) you are running:
  
  
  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. In the box, type winver, and then click OK.
  
  Look for “Microsoft Windows XP Professional” or "Microsoft Windows VISTA" in the blue banner at the top of the resulting window. If your computer cannot be upgraded to XP professional, then you may be eligible for an ETF replacement. Please contact your department ETF coordinator to determine eligibility.
  
  
• Why? This operating system has a great deal of security built into it, including an automatically activated firewall that closes some of the ports that are favorite entry points for hackers who want to control your computer or destroy your hard drive.
